  40.     WHAT IS agSI?
  41.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  42.     agSI is a system information tool running under DOS which gives dozens
  43.     of items of information about hardware/system, operating system, memory,
  44.     software, and drives, for example
  45.      - processor (incl. Pentium specific things), BIOS, BIOS extensions,
  46.        PCI, Plug and Play, CMOS RAM, interrupt vectors
  47.      - interfaces, graphics and sound cards, IRQ assignments
  48.      - operating system version, system file tables, country settings,
  49.        Windows modules (e.g. VxDs); with additional "Windows Services",
  50.        i.e. a Windows program to get some info for DOS-agSI
  51.      - DOS memory usage, EMS,XMS,DPMI etc.
  52.      - mouse driver, many installed resident programs and operating system
  53.        services and extensions (almost 100)
  54.      - logical drives (A: to Z:) with many details, including directory
  55.        tree, table of contents for CDs, and CD-ROM benchmark
  56.      - connected hard disks, including benchmark and IDE drive detection,
  57.        and SCSI host adapters and devices
  58.      - disk cache and online compressor
  59.  
  60.      - extensive and detailed online documentation (help system)
  61.      - optional continuous updating of the information in the current window
  62.        (where sensible)
  63.      - some actions can be done (e.g. change date/time, disk cache settings)
  64.      - memory dump window to browse through your systems (real-mode) memory
  65.      - also offers formatting floppy disks - with higher capacity
  66.      - option to print to COM1-4, LPT1-3, or a file
  67.      - runs of course under several operating systems and versions, like
  68.        MS-DOS, Novell DOS, PTS-DOS, a DOS session under Windows 3.1x, Windows
  69.        95 or OS/2 since version 2.

  71.     I must admit that many of what agSI shows will be of no interest to
  72.     average users, but useful for users with interest in internal stuff.

  75.     IMPORTANT NOTES

  77.     The faultless working of agSI can, especially because several
  78.     undocumented things are used, not be guaranteed, for there are many
  79.     different system configurations possible.
  80.     Should agSI crash on your system, try to localize the reason for
  81.     the error, and notify my about it, for I cannot adapt agSI if you
  82.     don't.

  98.     SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  99.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  100.     Minimum:
  101.      - an "IBM-compatible" computer with 80286 processor or better
  102.      - MS-DOS from version 3.3 or so, or compatible
  103.      - ca. 500 KB free DOS memory
  104.      - runs also from floppy disk (but slow due to overlay use)
  105.  
  106.     Recommended:
  107.      - 80386 processor or better
  108.        [better said: at least a 486; in what times do we live?!?]
  109.      - Mouse
  110.      - sufficient XMS memory and/or cache to load the overlay part of
  111.        the program
  112.      - on hard disk, ca. 1.2 MB is needed

  115.     SHAREWARE
  116.     ~~~~~~~~~
  117.     agSI is distributed as SHAREWARE, i.e. you have to keep to the
  118.     following rules:
  119.  
  120.     You may:
  121.      - give the shareware version to anybody (taking only a fee for
  122.        handling); this has to be done completely and unmodified
  123.        (recommendedly the original ZIP archive files)
  124.      - upload it to any BBS or software server, or put it on a CD-ROM
  125.        (here also: completely); if the latter, it would be kind of you
  126.        to inform me so I can keep track about how far agSI is spreading
  127.      - use (test) it for a period of 21 days; if you want to use agSI
  128.        after this period, you must register with the author, paying a
  129.        small amount of money.

  131.     You may NOT:
  132.      - pass the full version, i.e. a registration code, to anyone, any way
  133.      - use a single license on more than one computers, unless you make
  134.        sure that only one at a time can be used.
  135.  
  136.     agSI is no "crippleware", i.e. there are no limitations to the
  137.     shareware version; you are just being reminded about that by a window
  138.     at startup and a blinking title line.

  140.     file, and in the online help.

  143.     PACKAGE CONTENTS AND INSTALLATION

  145.     agSI is distributed in ZIP archives, with the name AGSIxxxD.ZIP for
  146.     the German and AGSIxxxE.ZIP for the English version; xxx means the
  147.     version number. (Exception: you ordered agSI on a diskette from me.)

  149.     As you are reading this file, you already have the files in an
  150.     unpacked state; you should have the following files:
  151.  
  152.         AGSI.EXE     - the program file
  153.         AGSI.OVR     - overlay program file
  154.         AGSI.HLP     - file for the online help
  155.         AGSIWINS.EXE - the "agSI Windows Services" - starts agSI from Windows
  156.                        and offers some more information about Windows
  157.         AGSI.PIF     - PIF file for running agSI under Windows
  158.         README.TXT   - this file
  159.         WHATSNEW.TXT - lists what's new in this release (plus revision
  160.                        history for older versions)
  161.         ORDERFRM.TXT - order form for registration
  162.         FILE_ID.DIZ  - short abstract file for BBS use
  163.         FDREAD.COM   - TSR to allow DOS to read high-capacity floppies
  164.                        (taken from the FDFORMAT 1.8 package by C.H.
  165.                         Hochstätter, available as FDF18.ZIP from, e.g.,
  166.                         SimTel in msdos/diskutil)
  167.     Any other file you may find in your archive has been added by someone
  168.     else; for instance, I do not distribute an AGSI.INI file.

  170.     (The first two files are needed for agSI to run; strongly recommended
  171.     is the help file.)

  173.     You may place the files in a directory of your choice (but all in
  174.     the same); during execution, the file AGSI.INI will be created which
  175.     contains several settings; including the registration code - so don't
  176.     pass it to someone else (without editing)!

  179.     START FROM THE COMMAND LINE
  180.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  181.     The command line of agSI has the following syntax:
  182.  
  183.       [d:\path]AGSI[.EXE] {[/|-]Option}
  184.  
  185.     with:
  186.       d:\path   is where agSI is located
  187.       Option    is one of the followin options (optionally with a
  188.                 preceding slash (/) or dash (-)):
  189.  
  190.                 ?   and
  191.                 H   shows a brief help text
  192.                 I   disables usage of bright background colors
  193.                 U   disables continuous updating of the info windows
  194.                 R   Real mode only, don't use the few protected mode calls
  195.                     agSI can make to gather a little more information
  196.                 D   runs agSI in debug mode: the amount of free heap
  197.                     memory is displayed in the lower right corner
  198.                 DX  "eXtra Debug" displays what's done at startup (use this
  199.                     if agSI hangs before the main screen comes up)
  200.                 DW  (AGSIWINS.EXE only) debug-mode for agSI\WinServ.

  202.     The options I and U may also be set in the Options dialog in the main
  203.     menu; these and other settings are stored in the AGSI.INI file,
  204.     further information about which you may find in the online help.

  207.     USING THE PROGRAM
  208.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  209.     agSI presents itself in a, as I think, nice look in DOS text mode
  210.     (with mouse support). On the left side is the menu, from which you
  211.     may select items the usual way; sub-menus are shown with a little
  212.     triangle to the right. If a menu item is to show an information page,
  213.     there are different options:
  214.     Press the Space key to open the info window, but leave the (main)
  215.     keyboard control at the menu;
  216.     press Tab to open the info window AND activate it;
  217.     for the Enter key, you may select which of the above functions
  218.     (default: like Space) it should do in the Options dialog (in the main
  219.     menu).
  220.     Pressing Esc brings you back one menu level.
  221.     This all works of course also with the mouse; simply click. (There
  222.     is no need to explicitly activate the info window when using the mouse,
  223.     of course.)

  225.     The Info Window:
  226.     Depending on the type of the displayed information, you may scroll
  227.     the contents of the info window just up/down, or you may highlight
  228.     each line seperately; for this you may use the cursor keys (including
  229.     PgUp/PgDn, Home/End, etc.), but the up/down and home/end keys only when
  230.     the window is active (see above), as they are used for the menu
  231.     otherwise.
  232.     Of course you may use the mouse here, too.
  233.     For the lines in the info window that are marked with a triangle to
  234.     the right you may get more, detailed information by pressing Enter (if
  235.     the window is active) or Ctrl-Enter (mouse: double click).
  236.     If there's a !! in the first column, you can perform some action corres-
  237.     ponding to the line (change a setting, or execute a command); in most
  238.     cases, a dialog window will be opened.
  239.  
  240.     With the key combination Alt-X you can leave agSI at any time.
  241.     (Exception: inside the help system; when a dialog is active; if a
  242.      sub-info-window is active.)
  243.  
  244.     The following actions may be performed with the mouse by clicking the
  245.     status line (the bottom-most line), or by pressing the corresponding
  246.     key:
  247.  
  248.     F1 - Help:   With this you get a help page for the current context.
  249.  
  250.                  If the highlighted menu item is the same that is displayed
  251.                  in the info window, you get a help page (or a certain
  252.                  position inside a help page) for the currently-highlighted
  253.                  line of the info window; otherwise, you get a page for the
  254.                  menu item.
  255.  
  256.     F2 - Print:  This opens a dialog window in which you may choose what
  257.                  to print to where with which options and highlighting.
  258.  
  259.     F7 - previous page:  jumps to the previous information page
  260.                  (considering the order of the menu).
  261.  
  262.     F8 - next page:  jumps to the next page.
  263.  
  264.     Alt-U - Update:  This key performs two actions: first, the current
  265.                  info window will be updated immediately; second, any
  266.                  further automatical countinuous updating of this window
  267.                  will be suppressed (until you select a new window).

  269.                  Continuous updating may be controlled globally in the
  270.                  Options dialog.
  271.  
  272.     Also, the status line sometimes displays some short hints.

  275.     IN THE HELP SYSTEM you may get help about using the help system by
  276.     pressing F1 a second time, review the previous topic with Alt-F1,
  277.     get to the alphabetical index with Shift-F1, and close the help window
  278.     with Esc.

  280.     To jump to a cross reference, first highlight the desired cross
  281.     reference using the cursor keys (the help window will be scrolled if
  282.     necessary), or a single click with the mouse. To jump to the connected
  283.     topic, press Space or Enter, or click again.

  309.     As you know, agSI is distributed as shareware. The registration fee
  310.     is US-$ 23 or DM 30 for a single license; you will then recieve a
  311.     registration code (which consists of eight letters) which you enter
  312.     along with your name in the Register dialog (in the main menu).
  313.     This registration is valid at least for all 1.x.x versions.
  314.  
  315.     Normally, no disks will be sent; but if you want it that way, that's
  316.     possible, of course (price: US-$ 4 / DM 5 per disk; plus an
  317.     additional $6/DM 8 for postage&packing if outside of Europe).
  318.     Note that sending of the disk will be delayed until the next version
  319.     is available if you already have the current one (which the order
  320.     form tells) (unless you specify differently).
  321.     Also, by default only the English version will be on a disk; however,
  322.     you can specify on the order form if you want only the German version,
  323.     or both (on a single disk).

  325.     As payment you may either mail me a cheque (or cash), or you order -
  326.     inside of Germany only! - by C.O.D., which adds a DM 5 fee.
  327.     Credit cards: American Express, VISA, Diners Club are accepted;
  328.     Mastercard/Eurocard soon, so ask (or look at my WWW page).

  373.     programmed very close to the hardware, this is pretty likely (I can't
  374.     test hundreds of systems and configurations - or anything you don't
  375.     like, tell me; only this way agSI can be more and more improved.
